Twitter has been ringing in the changes for its Web version off late. After announcing picture-heavy web profiles for all users, the company is now looking to bring quicker engagements and a more wholesome experience.
Twitter will be rolling out real-time notifications for the Web version in the next few weeks. With these pop-up notifications on the bottom right corner, you would be able to get alerts for direct messages, @mentions, and when your tweets are favourited, retweeted. Twitter will also show you new followers through this notification, which takes form as an unobtrusive floating rectangle on the bottom right corner.
The best part about these notifications is that they are fully actionable. So you can reply to any direct messages and @mentions and even favourite or retweet tweets or follow back. Users can choose which alerts they want to be notified for. The notification settings will be available within the general settings page.
Of course, it has not escaped us that Twitter is taking inspiration from many Facebook features. The web profiles are very much on the lines of Facebook profiles, down to the cover image. Real-time notifications are also something Facebook introduced a while back, but it makes a lot more sense on Twitter, where interaction is basically a string of connected tweets. By giving users a way to respond instantly, it’s hoping conversation will go on longer, even if the tweets themselves are short.
We can also see how this ties in to Twitter’s plan to take on the messaging brigade, by making conversation on Twitter instant. It remains to be seen if this translates into better notifications on Twitter’s smartphone apps. It’s an interesting direction taken by Twitter to make the conversation faster and more lively. And we for one are wishing they had thought about this earlier.
