Enterprise software vendor Intralinks acquired document encryption service docTrackr for $10 million in cash. Gigaom first spotted the news ian an SEC filing, Intralinks confirmed in a release. docTrackr provided powerful plugins to add a security layer on top of Gmail or Box.
For example, you could send a PDF file using docTrackr to encrypt the file on your computer and then track it. You could see when someone opened a file and wipe documents remotely.
docTrackr was one of the French companies in Le Camping‘s first batch. It was later accelerated at TechStars Boston as well. The company raised a $2 million seed round from Polaris Partners, Atlas Venture, Lead Dog Ventures and angels.
Last year, Box even wrote a blog post about docTrackr’s capabilities. In other words, Box was a large docTrackr advocate. It was a good way to provide a full-fledged DRM solution to its users.
With today’s acquisition, CEO Ron Hovesepian said that third-party customers, such as Box, will still be able to use docTrackr. But, according to Gigaom, Box tried to outbid Intralinks to secure this technology — it didn’t succeed.
Providing a good security solution is a good way to differentiate your service from competitors. For example, Dropbox doesn’t have a compelling encryption solution. That’s why Box will certainly work with other security solutions (or even build an in-house solution) to replace docTrackr.
