Bentley reveals Hybrid Concept

Bentley promised to make available at least 90 percent of its cars as plug in hybrids by the end of the decade.

Bentley unveiled its “Hybrid Concept” Sunday at the Beijing International Automotive Show.
The luxury car maker’s plug-in hybrid system increases power by up to 25 percent, reduces emissions by 70 percent and has a driving range of at least 50 km on electric power alone, the company claims in a news release.

“Adding performance and efficiency with no compromise to luxury –Plug-in hybrids are an important part of Bentley’s exciting future,” said Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, Bentley Motors Chairman and CEO, during the Bentley press conference at the show. “We are proud to be pioneering these developments in the ultra luxury sector.”

The Bentley Hybrid Concept is based on its £225,000 flagship model, the Mulsanne. According to a report in the Telegraph, the conventionally powered Mulsanne consumes fuel at a rate of 16.8 miles per gallon and pumps out a hefty 393 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Highlighting the company’s commitment to plug in hybrids, Bentley promised to introduce a plug-in hybrid SUV in 2017 and to make available at least 90 percent of its cars as plug in hybrids by the end of the decade.

“Hybrid technology can enhance even the pinnacle of luxury and performance,” said the company in the news release.

The unveiling of this news in Beijing additionally signals the importance of the Chinese market to Bentley’s future.

“China has always been a key market for Bentley,” said Ricky Tay, Managing Director, Bentley Motors China during the press conference. “Our customer base is growing and we are expanding our dealer network to offer our ultra luxury products and a unique brand experience throughout the region.”
